MEDICATIONS & VACCINATIONS , *PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR*, 1. Diamox (Acetazolamide): Normally starts to be taken the day before climbing the mountain. Typically one should be taking 250mg per day. Tablets are usually provided in 250mg round tablets. Clients are normally told to break this 250mg round tablet in half to make it 125mg per tablet, taking one 125mg in the morning with breakfast and one 125mg with dinner. Normally it is good to take it before dinner. This medication is a diarrhetic. It is used to treat altitude sickness as well as other things such as glaucoma, epilepsy, and more. It will make you have to pee more than normal. This is one reason why it is essential you drink at least 3L of water per day on the trek., 2. Dexamethasone: Normally good to have when sleeping above 3,000m (9,800 ft). It looks like doctors have been recommending this medication to use for when climbers are feeling symptoms of HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema). Dexamethasone is believed to prevent cerebral edema by maintaining blood-brain barrier integrity., 3. Anti-Diarrhea Medication: This is normally used in case you have diarrhea on the mountain. We recommend you to have both an OVER THE COUNTER as well as PRESCRIPTION anti- diarrhea medication on the mountain., 4. Vaccinations: Your doctor may want you to be vaccinated prior to flying to Tanzania. Please consult a travel clinic or doctor about your vaccination status prior to flying to Tanzania. Doctors will normally recommend: hepatitis a, hepatitis b, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever. Yellow Fever is NOT a requirement to enter Tanzania. Please consult the CDC website for further information regarding vaccinations:, https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/tanzania, 5. Malaria Medication: Doctors will prescribe Malaria prevention medication to their patients if travelling to Tanzania. We recommend to follow your doctor’s instructions pertaining to this medication. There are no mosquitos on Kilimanjaro as they do not live at such elevations, so, if prescribed this medication, some clients decide not to take this medication during the climb. They will start to take it a few days before descending the mountain, if they are doing a safari or any other adventure. It may have side effects such as nausea and, info@alldayinafrica.com www.alldayinafrica.com +255 763 993 399nightmares while taking it during your climb. If you are doing a safari in Tanzania, going to Zanzibar, or travelling to do any other activities in the country it is recommended to take this medication. Please follow the recommendation of your physician., 6. Personal Medication: Please bring any personal medication that you normally use at home with you, including items such as Advil, Tylenol, Benadryl, etc. Please also bring any other items you may use at home including Band-Aids, blister packs, etc., , , , VISAS, In Person at the Airport: Most tourists can purchase their visas upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)., 1. E-VISA (Electronic): Tourists can purchase a visa electronically via Tanzania’s official E- Visa application website. You can visit the website at: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/ We recommend to complete the E-VISA application at least 45 days before entering Tanzania. Please read to the end of this section for more information., 2. Visa Application Guidelines: Tourists can find information on Tanzania’s E-VISA website for a list of countries which require a referral for a visa, countries which do not require a visa, and so on. You can find it at the following link: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/guidelines Canadian Citizens currently pay $ 50 US per person for a visa. US Citizens currently pay $ 100 US per person for a visa. Most visas are called “Single Entry Visa” or “Multiple Entry Visa”. Either of these are good to enter, Tanzania with. We recommend to get the visa upon arrival as there have been some issues we have heard with past guests of ours and other tourists as well. It happens that if someone applies for a visa 2-3-4 weeks before the trip, sometimes the visa application is submitted but not approved by the time the guest arrives in Tanzania at the airport. While submitting the E-VISA application, you must pay by credit card. Once the tourist arrives in Tanzania, they force them to pay in cash at the airport as the immigration officers can only see approved E- VISA applications in their system. In effect, paying twice with no reimbursement of the online payment..
